Independent Science Research Project

The purpose of this assignment is to give you an opportunity to research a space science topic that you are interested in. The topic must be science related and it must be something you can find information on from the internet and in books. You will present the findings of your research project in a 5 minute presentation in class. You will also turn in a one-page summary and reflective essay one week after your presentation.
Due Dates
Proposal (10 points):  3/22/16
Type up a 1 paragraph document that includes:
o   The topic to be investigated, try to be specific.
o   Why you chose that topic, and what you hope to learn.
o   A little bit of information that you already know about the topic.
o   What you will do for the presentation.

Check in point 1 (10 points): 4/1/16
You must bring in a list of 3 resources you are using, it must include at least one non-internet source (book, magazine, etc.) and be able to talk a little bit to Mr. Kehoe about what you have learned so far.
Check in point 2 (10 points): 4/22/16
You should have evidence of the beginning of a presentation to show Mr. Kehoe. For example you should show Mr. Kehoe your Prezi or video so far, or have material for a poster. You will have access to OneDrive and the internet for this class.
Presentations (40 points) 5/9/16 – 5/27/16  (Sign up for a date at check in point 2)
You must prepare a 5 minute (including questions) presentation that shows what you have learned about your topic. The presentation can take a number of forms (PowerPoint, Poster, Video, Booklet, Demonstration, or something else as long as you get the okay from Mr Kehoe).

Space Science and Independent Research Project Ideas

The purpose of the Independent Science Project is to give you the opportunity to research an area of Space Science that you are interested in and that we won't cover in class this trimester. Most of the topics we won't cover are areas beyond the Solar System. However you can choose to research something within the Solar System in more depth than what we will cover. For example you could research the Mars Lander Curiosity, The Rings of Saturn or The Moons of Jupiter.

Below are a list of topics we will cover in class in the Earth, Moon and Sun Unit and the Solar System Unit. What are some ideas beyond these topics that you can think of?

Earth Moon and Sun Concepts
Earth's Orbit, Rotation, and Tilt
Day/Night and time zones
Seasons
Solar Flares
Eclipses
Tides
Phases of the Moon
Satellites

Solar System Concepts
The Terrestrial Planets
The Gas Giants
Comets/Asteroids/Meteors
Asteroid Belt and Oort Cloud
Definition of a planet

For Wednesday I would like you to come up with 5 concepts related to Space Science that you would consider researching.

The Energy Debate

I'm Back! Trimester 3 is going to be a fun Trimester learning about Space Science. On Monday we will begin learning about the Sun, Earth and Moon. But before then we are wrapping up learning about Climate Change with an Energy Debate.

Here is the scenario:
The year is 2040 and the population of Olympia has doubled. The city badly needs new energy sources to keep up with demand.

You all have jobs working with different power companies and you have to convince the Mayor of Olympia (Mr Kehoe) why the city should build your type of power plant.

Nice work on your research in class today, if you didn't get 100% feel free to email me additional notes to improve your grade. On Thursday we will conduct the debate in class!
